Aims
1: The INFORMATION MANAGER learns what business continuity management (BCM) means to a business, why it is important regarded to compliance, business objective and corporate responsibility.
The student learns what the the BCM “building blocks” are and learns to set-up a basic business continuity strategy.
The student also learns what governance is required in a BCM program and makes acquaintance with the principles of handling a real crisis.
2: The INDORMATION MANAGER is able to set up a Business Continuity Management System (“BCMS”). To be able to do so, the fundamental concepts are explained and used in practice:
Alignment parameters, Recovery time objectives (RTO), Recovery point objectives (RPO), The concept of what a “business process” really is, The process dependencies/contributors, Composition of a crisis team, Crisis communication, Crisis actions, ...
Also, the linked concepts information security/risk attributes like confidentiality, integrity and data protection (GDPR), non-availability of personal data and data breach are explained and expected to be used in a practical business game.
3: The INFORMATION MANAGER builds expertise in the governance aspects of business continuity management. He / she learns to deal with the concepts of “quality of the information ” and“completeness of information ”in a business continuity management system.
He / she knows will know the concepts and the differences between a “table test”, ICT-related test and non-ICT-related test. Further, fundaments of risk-management create the ability to perform a risk-assessment, to deal with the results of such analysis (interpretation), risk classification, risk types and concrete risk examples that can cause disruptive events like a cyber-attack , a fire,…
4: The INFORMATION MANAGER has expertise in managing a real crisis.
By means of a business game during the course, students will create their own fictional Company and set-up the BCM fundamentals. The game consists in the creation of a disaster scenario (by the teacher) and the groups will have to deal with this crisis. The teacher intervenes with complexity, fictitious additional difficulties, curious press and customers ... The groups present and debrief to each-other in order for the game to be very learnful.
5: The INFORMATION MANAGER has the necessary analytical insight. He / she identifies a problem / situation in his context.
Search efficiently foradditional, relevant information. He / she performs activities and uses brainpower to approach problems and situations in a targeted manner.

Content
The student learns applies the principles of business continuity management and disaster recovery management.The student gets to know the critical phases in a recovery plan and learns how a scenario can be built to recover business processes during a calamity. This is not only about managing IT-related recovery plans, but also especially crisis management aspects with regard to people, buildings, operations and company image.
Moreover, the student gets to know the communication that must be conducted with the business in the event of an emergency. The student learns to test the plans in sandbox exercises.

The academic content is immediately and constantly discussed with practical examples during the lectures. The student is then given a concrete assignment that must be worked out. The results are presented and discussed in group. The quotation method is based on a “permanent evaluation” during the class, the quality of the end-game participation and contents, the quality of the business continuity concepts that students adopt during the business game and finally an individual quiz that is discussed in class.
