Aims
Domain specific learning outcomes of the study programme:
• To look up, analyze and summarize communications from, in and about organizations, with communication advice in mind. (level: advanced beginner / competent performer)
• To create informative and persuasive messages for internal as well as external communications. (level: advanced beginner / competent performer)
• To express oneself correctly in Dutch, and to use the Dutch language creatively. To communicate fluently and with the target audience in mind, and give presentations in several languages, both orally and in writing. (level: advanced beginner / competent performer)
• To assess the importance of social and legal implications of communications strands and to act deontologically. (level: advanced beginner / competent performer)
• To reflect on and analyze one's personal learning needs, and to take initiatives accordingly to further professionalize in the quickly evolving area of communications. To keep track of new trends / developments regarding communications management. (level: advanced beginner / competent performer)
Course objectives:
Listening and Reading
The student determines the general subject, identifies the main idea(s), follows the train of thought, selects relevant information, reflects on and judges the information in a wide variety of texts and audio/video recordings.
Speaking and Writing
The student:
• summarizes what he has watched, listened to or read in a comprehensible way, and puts forward a personal view or conclusion, stating reasons;
• reports and comments on relevant personal experiences and/or prior knowledge related to content;
• aims for a correct use of vocabulary and grammar.
Attitudes
The student:
• listens/reads without prejudice;
• is willing to actively participate in conversations/discussions;
• responds respectfully to the contributions of others in a conversation/discussion;
• looks for and collects information when necessary to perform his task by using traditional and/or electronic sources and databases;
• takes the diversity in the English-speaking world into account and identifies with the speaker’s/writer’s socio-cultural world.
Previous knowledge
The minimum requirement is an upper intermediate level of English or level B2 (speaking, understanding and reading) according to CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for languages), though an advanced level or level C1 for listening and reading is recommended.

Content
Texts and audio/video recordings which:
• mainly concern aspects of corporate communications, but also subjects of a more general nature, i.e. current issues;
• come from a variety of sources, reflecting the diversity of the print and broadcast media in the English-speaking world;
• are all authentic, i.e. abridged nor adapted;
• can deviate from the standard language;
• can be fairly abstract and contain implicit information.

Evaluation

Explanation
There is no exam in January.
Continuous assessment consists of:
- A vocabulary test on the pc (QuestionMark), accounting for 20% of your total score. You need a thorough command of the vocabulary lists which accompany the assignments (cfr. Study materials)
- A number of conversations/discussions in class about a wide variety of assignments individually prepared in advance, accounting for 80% of your total score. In class you can use your personal, handwritten notes. A description of these assignments, as well as the materials you need to perform them (texts, audio/video recordings, glossaries), can be found on Drive S (Studoef) Keller, Raoul - 1COM – English 1 – Assignments 2017-2018.
2nd exam opportunity: more information
Your exam consists of:
